I started professionally fishing on the south coast in the early 1990's and then in 1996 commenced charter fishing and spent three seasons working on one of the best tuna fishing boats around. Late nineties saw the start of the Striped marlin explosion and i was lucky enough to fish some of the really insane seasons then and in early 2000's both at Bermagui and Ulladulla racking up some plus hundred fish seasons in both places. Late 2000's saw the start of a reliable Bluefin tuna run and I was lucky enough to one of the first boats to start catchng these fish in 2007 by 2009 it was a well established fishery.
Hotfishing specialises in marlin fishing charters, we have caught over a 1000 marlin in the last twenty years - catching marlin is my favourite thing to do.
We were one of the first to develop the method of bait and switch using circle hooks on the south coast of NSW and east coast of Australia generally, and is now a standard technique along the east coast. We switched our first marlin onto a circle hook in 1999 and used circle hooks in 1998.
We were also the first to develop the bait ball fishing methods commonly used today.
Last season we had two days where we caught ten fish in one day. I have had 100 plus fish seasons out of Ulladulla/Batemans bay area as well as Bermagui.
Bermagui is famous for tuna fishing, originally for yellowfin tuna and now for Bluefin. Bluefin tuna charters run from late June until early August.
Arriving in early winter and hanging around until spring bluefin tuna schools from 35 to 70 kg are found offshore of Bermagui.
Fast and furious action can be had if the the schools can be located and are feeding.
virtually every bait in the water will nbe taken and having 5 or 6 fish on at once can lead to some hectic fishing.
Yellowfin fishing is a little bit different - the large individuals tend to be solitary fish. A big yellowfin is one of the toughest fish in the sea and will take over an hour to land on 24kg tackle.
