Mako Sharks

Mako sharks can be encountered when tuna fishing as a bycatch or can be deliberately targeted by setting up a berley trail of fine particles of fish and tuna oil. Occasionally a mako will be captured while marlin fishing.

The best times for makos are when the the water temperatures drop slightly in autumn and early winter and once they start to rise again in spring. During spring large female makos breed off the south coast and some very large ones in excess of 200kg can be caught.

It is recommended that these large breeding females are released to ensure healthy populations for the future
