Mako sharks are found all year around at Bermagui, but the biggest ones are caught in October and November when mako sharks congregate on the south coast, from Jervis Bay to Ulladulla, Batemans Bay to Bermagui and Eden. we normally fish for sharks by drifting along deep reefs and the edge of the shelf and berleying with a combination of finely minced oily fish to attract surface cruising sharks and larger chunks of fish being thrown over the side at regular intervals to bring sharks from up from the deep water. The largest makos normally come from deeper water on the edge of the shelf or over one of the canyons areas that exist in the Bermagui fishing zone. They are also caught while marlin fishing with live or dead baits on the troll and while drift fishing for tuna during autumn and winter, they are also hooked bottom fishing over the reefs of Bermagui and a mako follows up the hooked fish or eats the hooked fish. mako sharks found in the Bermagui region can range in size from 10 kilos to over 500 kilos. the average size encountered would be in the range 40 kg to 150 kg .
